Survival Phrases In Egypt

The words that keep your day smooth.

Why these matter

When Egypt moves fast, these phrases slow the moment down. They help you answer simply, refuse politely, and signal what you need.

The phrases (with pronunciation + use)

Masa’ el-kheir (ma-SA el-KHAIR) — Good evening
Use it in hotel lobbies, restaurants, and night walks.

Kwayyis / Kwayyisa (kway-YES / kway-YI-sa) — I’m good / fine
Your default “I’m okay.”

Mish kwayyis (MISH kway-YES) — Not good / not okay
Use it when you’re tired, overheated, or something feels off.

La, shukran (LA, SHOOK-ran) — No, thank you
Your polite shield in markets and on the street.

Shukran giddan (SHOOK-ran GID-dan) — Thank you very much
Use it after help, kindness, or great service.

Bititkallim ingleezi? (bi-tit-KAL-lim in-GLEE-zi) — Do you speak English?
A practical bridge when you need it.

Practice (1 minute)

  • Say Kwayyis and Mish kwayyis out loud once.
